Mr. Carroll's senior Civics class reenacted Jonathan Mayhew’s sermon to the American population in the 1750’s this morning. The sermon was part of an evangelical mission that influenced the Declaration of Independence. This period in history came to be known as the First Great Awakening. Mayhew’s passionate sermon interprets Paul’s Letter to the Romans. That is, Romans 13:1-7, and explores the relationship between the individual and a political authority under God. This sermon, along with many others during the First Great Awakening, played a massive role toward influencing the Declaration of Independence.
