On Monday, December 6, PJP’s Foreign Language Club celebrated St. Nicholas Day by enjoying a potluck and learning about Christmas traditions among various countries. Students each brought their own dish that originated from a specific country. Some of these dishes included macaroons, churros, Christmas cookies, chips and queso, oreo balls, croissants, and egg rolls. These dishes incorporated rich history from countries including France, Spain, Mexico, Austria, China, the United States, and more. Some students shared information about the Christmas traditions held in their chosen food’s country of origin. For example, students learned that in Mexico, they celebrate a festival for 9 nights and dress up and parade with candles. In Sweden, people leave a Christmas gnome with a bowl of porridge similar to how Americans leave cookies for Santa. Additionally, they learned about the legend of St. Nicholas which entails the story of how St. Nicholas provided for the needs of the poor by throwing bags of gold through families’ windows. Some of this gold landed in children’s stockings and shoes. The Foreign Language Club recognized St. Nicholas’ act of giving rather than receiving, and they recalled his story by finding chocolate gold coins in their own shoes. Students along with Club Moderators Mrs. Burk and Mr. Campos spent the rest of their Christmas party enjoying their delicious treats and watching videos to learn additional information about Christmas traditions around the world. Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, and joyeux Noël!
